What’s in Your Coffee Maker?

Keurig coffee makers were created for convenience. A lot of the time we make our morning coffee without thinking. However, over time your coffee maker can start to not work at max efficiency. Coffee residue and minerals from water can build, affecting the flavor or clog parts of your coffee maker. Slowly but surely, your coffee slowly starts to taste more and more bitter. If coffee and water are left unattended for too long, yeast, mold, and bacteria can grow in the bottom of your maker.

How Often Should You Clean Your Coffee Maker?

It’s not practical to clean your Keurig after every cup of coffee. The point of buying a Keurig in the first place is for convenience. So how often should we clean it so that we’re able to keep our coffee tasting fresh and untainted?

Once a week:

  • Disconnect every removable part from your Keurig including the water reservoir and mug tray and K-Cup holder.

  1. Clean each part with a cloth and soapy water.

  2. Let all of the pieces air dry since the cloth can leave behind lint.

  3. Wipe down the outside of your coffee maker with a damp rag.

For a Deeper Clean:

  • Every few months it’s good to “descale” your coffee maker.

  1. This means putting cleaner in the water reservoir and letting your Keurig run. Many people use vinegar, but Keurig has its own descaling solution which is completely odorless.

  2. Pour 16 ounces of white vinegar mixed with 16 ounces of water.

  3. Run your Keurig until the ADD WATER indicator turns on. Let it sit for 30 minutes then run it again with water to make sure all the product is cleaned out.

  4. Clean the Keurig needle by carefully using a paperclip to clear out any clogging debris lodged in the needle then rinse.

Overall, this process proves it’s really easy to get your Keurig clean again and ready for those brisk fall mornings now that autumn is here. Thank you for taking the time to read this article and to celebrate, you’ve earned a hot cup of coffee, cheers!
